Congratulations, you've made it through the initial screening! The interview is the final, and often most critical, hurdle in the application process. It's your chance to move beyond the paper application and show the admissions committee your personality, your passion, and your genuine fit for their program. It's also your chance to interview them, to see if the program truly aligns with your values and aspirations.

Common interview formats vary. You might encounter individual interviews with several faculty members, allowing for deeper, one-on-one conversations. Some programs utilize group interviews, where you might interact with other applicants or participate in a group activity, allowing the committee to observe your interpersonal skills and how you collaborate. There are also informal meet-and-greets with current students, which are invaluable for getting an unfiltered perspective on program culture. Be prepared for a full day, sometimes even two, of intense interaction.

Typical questions will revolve around your motivations ("Why psychology? Why this program?"), your research interests ("Tell us about your research experience. What are your future research ideas?"), your clinical experience ("What have you learned from your clinical experiences? How do you handle challenging situations?"), your strengths and weaknesses, and how you cope with stress. You might also be asked about ethical dilemmas, diversity and inclusion, or your understanding of the scientist-practitioner model. Anticipate behavioral questions ("Tell me about a time you failed and what you learned.") and be ready to articulate your responses clearly and concisely, using specific examples.

Strategies for demonstrating preparedness involve thorough research. Re-read your application, know your SOP inside and out, and be ready to elaborate on every point. Research the faculty you're interviewing with, understanding their work and preparing specific questions for them. Practice answering common interview questions out loud. Dress professionally, arrive on time (or early), and maintain good eye contact. Be authentic, enthusiastic, and confident, but not arrogant. Remember, they're looking for someone they can work with for the next 5-7 years.

Equally important are the effective questions to ask interviewers. This demonstrates your engagement and critical thinking. Ask about:
